             abstract = "ABSTRACT: The objective of this work was to quantify burned areas 
                         within two conservation unities of sustainable use in the North of 
                         Minas Gerais, Brazil. The environmental protection areas APA 
                         Gib{\~a}o and Coch{\'a}, and APA Pandeiros cover an area of 
                         284.618ha and 210.000ha, respectively. Vegetation types in the 
                         area are mainly cerrado, veredas and deciduous forests. Burned 
                         area polygons were extracted by digital processing of Landsat TM 
                         images followed by visual interpretation. Images from September 
                         1st, 2007 and October 3rd, 2007 were used for the analysis. NDVI 
                         were generated for each temporal image and NDVI difference images 
                         were calculated. Classification of burned areas was performed 
                         using ISODATA algorithm followed by visual interpretation. The 
                         results showed the potential of medium spatial resolution images 
                         for segmenting burn scars.",
