%K multi-temporal analysis, land use/ land cover changes, deforestation in Amazonia.
%X The southeastern region of Pará State, Brazil, is one of the critical areas of Amazon deforestation, due to the great transformations that have occurred there. In this paper, the landscape dynamic in the area of São Francisco rural colonization project is spatially evaluated by considering the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images acquired in 1992, 1996 and 2000, using the SPRING software. It was observed that Primary Forest class, occupying more than 70% of the total area in 1992, was reduced to approximately a half of it in 2000. On the other hand, the areas of pasture that reached about 10% of the total in 1992, accounted for more than 40% of the area in 2000, with similar behavior reported for the secondary vegetation areas. For the landscape dynamic, two distinct situations were observed, where the percentages of stability for the land cover and land use classes being lowest in the 1996-2000 period, due to the intensification of the colonization process. In both analyzed periods, for all of the classes mapped, the highest percentages of conversion were for pasture class.
