AbstractThe accuracies of the global AVHRR Sea Surface Temperature (SST)algorithms, derived from NOAA 11 and 12 satellites, were determined from comparisons with a match-up data set of drifting buoy measurements for the southeast coast of Brazil. The NOAA 11 algorithm had a RMSD of 0.87 C with a bias of 0.24 C, and the NOAA 12 algorithm presented a RMSD of 0.94 C and a bias of 0.32 C. In order to eliminate the bias and reduce the RMSD's, new regional algorithms were derived for the region, with two different approaches. In the first, regression lines are used to correct the SST values generated by the global algorithm. In the second, new split-window equations were derived by multiple regression models. The application of both methods leads to RMSD's improvements, with no significant statistical differences between them.
