AbstractLandsat-TM images were examined for the possibility that hydrocarbon microseepage areas, identified through a geochemical soil gas survey, could be detected under the physiographic and geologic characteristics of the study area. Principal component analysis technique was used as an attempt to eliminate redundancy among the six TM reflective bands, and to enhance information that is unique to each spectral band. PC1, PC2, and PC6 images were discharged due to dominant contribution of scene albedo, greenness of the vegetation cover, and noise, respectively. Despite concentrating only 18 of the total variability of the data, PC3 (11), PC4 (5), and PC5 (2) images enhanced particular terrain spectral features, allowing remote identification of the target areas.
