| Abstract | The Metropolitan Area is the main urban and industrial area of the Espírito Saint State, concentrating a population of 1,438,596 inhabitants, what acts about 46,45% of all population of the state. Industrial and urban growth happened in this area changing the land according to the most several interests. Green areas were suppressed to give place to houses, buildings, highways and others infrastructures that promote the development. The objective of this research was of accomplishing a space and temporary mapping of the urban occupation happened in Metropolitan Area of Vitória in the period from 1991 to 2009. For this, the study counted with the use of fourteen Landsat images of different times. The used methodology was supervised classification of the first image used as base for a visual analysis of the urban expansion for the following years. In the sequence were generated urban annual maps of the area that allowed a quantification of these areas. Those maps were analyzed in geographical information systems for an interpretation of the dynamics of expansion of the area. Then, the urban expansion data were confronted with the population growth data of the same period contributing to a better understanding of the dynamics of urban expansion. |
