AbstractThe concern about the water in the state of Espírito Santo led the state government to adopt measures, in order to contribute to the conservation of this natural resource. Accordingly, the Benevente river basin, located in the southern state, was chosen as pilot area of the Project Water Producers. Although the lack of detailed information of Benevente river basin opposes the great importance of managing the use of natural resources based on knowledge of the actual carrying capacity and vulnerability of these resources. In order to provide subsidies to the better management of the Basin, this study aimed to characterize the soils, the land use and occupation and morphometry of Benevente river basin. Soils profiles and samples were collected to characterize the soils of the study area. The samples were sent to physical, chemical and mineralogical analysis. The Geographic Information System (GIS) - software ArcGIS 9.2 - was used for the preparation of thematic maps on 1:50,000 scale. Morphometric aspects were obtained from Digital Elevation Model Hydrologically Consistent (DEMHC) prepared by interpolating the contour (20 to 20 m) on 1:50,000 scale. The highest part of the basin has a higher density of drainage and is subject to greater structural control where the rivers run on rocks. On the lower part of the landscape the drainage density is lower and the rivers flow on sediment following a natural inclination of the Barreiras Group. Livestock is the most significant activity within the Basin. Soils, use and occupation present peculiar characteristics in each sub-basin.
