AbstractThis article examines the spatial discretization of volcanic eruptions in the Misti volcano, Arequipa, Peru. For this, we used two scenes of ASTER SWIR sensor, one of radiance at the sensor (L1B) and another, a reflectance with atmospheric and crosstalk correction (AST_07XT), dated March 17, 2008. For both scenes, we made the Principal Component Analysis transformation and selected PC-2, which was filtered with a 3 x 3 low pass and segmented into 8 classes with the rainbow color table, representing the 8 units identified in the field. In the radiance data, the bands 7 and 8 were the ones that contributed most to the composition of PC2. This is coherent, because in those bands we discovered spectral features of the main mineral found in Mistis lava flow. The bands 8 and 9 are the ones that most contributed to the composition of PC2 in a reflectance data. The band 9 is the one that contains the crosstalk problem. Another problem discovered in the reflectance data was the fact that all the eigenvectors of PC1 are negative, which reverses the relief. We didnt find any explanation to this fact in the literature. The results with radiance and reflectance data shows the same units, but it can be seen that radiance data showed greatest consistence with the eruptions than the reflectance data. The variation of 3400m in height between the city and the volcano's cone can be explained, because the topographical effects adopted in atmospheric correction eventually change the results in reflectance data.
