AbstractRemote sensing is the science that studies the targets without having physical contact with them (INPE, 2001). It is the interaction of these targets with electromagnetic radiation that this science is based. Delimit the land use with orbital sensors in 2008 from Subaé River Basin is a practical example of its application. The Subaé river ecosystem has an extreme importance for the Feira de Santana City, providing many uses since the foundation of the city but with urban process evolution the ecosystem degradation has become a serious problem. We used image sensor orbital LANDSAT 5, 2008 to define the current land use (using the software ArcGIS 9.3), related to the quality of surface water data for the understanding of the impacts of that use on the springs and ponds in the area. The overall results show an occupation of the land comprised predominantly urban settlement with an area of 639,07 hectares representing 44,02% and 510,33 hectares of area of pasture with 35,16%. The point of the source of the river basin Subaé presented physical and quimical standards (dissolved oxygen (NPS-01, NPS-03), are those with the lowest values (0.4 and 2.8 mg / L)) and biological water quality above the limits established by CONAMA Resolution 357/2005 that is allocated exclusively to an urban area, which can determine the type of waste that is contributing to changes in water quality standard.
