| Abstract | Organic agriculture is a holistic production management system, sustainable development, which promotes balance of the agricultural ecosystem and is an alternative to enable small farms. The introduction of agriculture production organic systems allows the provision of health food, enabling producers and consumers to enjoy a better quality diet and life. The municipality of Arroio do Meio/RS presents 1,100 properties that develop traditional farming systems, with a small proportion develops organic production systems. This paper aims to indicate potential places for to promote organic production systems. Decision support routines were explored in this study, being used resources of GIS, RapidEye satellite images and a cartographic information digital database, extracted from topographic maps in 1:50,000 scale, to assess the potential areas for growing organic foods. The proposed methodology is based on the choice of suitability criteria and restriction criteria. The restrictions are absolute barriers, as permanent preservation areas defined in environmental lays. The suitability factors consider the importance of environmental and economic characteristics to organic systems implementation. The suitability factors considered were: slope, land use classes, distance do native forest patches, distance to roads and distance do urban area. The results indicated that the Arroio do Meio municipality has potential to increase the places with organic agriculture. The higher fitness places are situated on flat slopes, adjacent of roads, near of forest areas and in actual traditional agriculture areas. |
