AbstractPopulation growth has induced the occupation of areas that require environmental protection. Such places need constant monitoring, otherwise the quality of environment affect peoples lives. Thats the case of dams that are used as water resource to produce electric energy, they need to be preserved to keep providing an energy of quality to population. Some dams are constantly suffering with local human presence, such as buildings and fishing. In this cases satellite images are very useful for identifying points that new establishments are checked. The classification in two images of the same local that differ in the moment of time they were taken can provide where are the locals that new kinds of human activity are appearing. This work has the objective of developing a methodology of classification of two different sensor and time period satellite images that were provided in only one color composed band each. As the digital archives of the images were missing the values of the bands of the satellite sensor, the parameters of the classification method had to be tested by an empirical method. The methodology developed showed quite good results. The commission errors that appeared were mostly associated with the inappropriate registration of the two images, indicating the method potential. Therefore, methodologies of identifying change using high resolution images depends a lot in the registration process.
