AbstractPalm swamps represent an important and fragile ecosystem that develop under very specific conditions, always associated with a river system and a mostly flat topography. Palm swamps are in fact vegetation complexes composed of a succession of vegetation forms that range from gramineous to sclerophyllous. Being very sensitive to humidity, synthetic aperture radar data from RADARSAT offers good potential for delineating veredas, however it does not make possible the distinction of the various physiognomies. In this article, a methodology is described using radar imagery for the delineation of veredas. The methodology seeks a simplified approach that uses a buffer zone based on the hydrographic network and that does not require training data. Results show that although the automatic segmentation of RADARSAT data yielded relatively poor results with only 50%-62% of overall success, it is reliable enough for delineating large and very humid palm swamps.
