| Abstract | The estimate of crop area is important for planning purposes. However, this estimate is complex. There is an alternative and objective methodology developed by using remote sensing and statistical sampling. This paper describes an experiment in which the accuracy of this methodology is compared to the official, but subjective, estimate. Two municipalities were used in the experiment. The crop in which we were interested was wheat. The non-subjective estimate was done by checking the land use of the samples in the field; in addition two kinds of digital classifications were applied coupled to a CBERS and Landsat multitemporal analysis. The results showed that the estimates from the objective were much closer to the digital classification than to the official estimates. As a conclusion, the estimates based on statistical sampling designed based on remote sensing images and sampling design proved to be useful and trustful. | |||
