AbstractThe objective of the present work is to identify the Urban Heat Island in São José dos Campos city by the use of the visible and thermal channels of Landsat-5 satellite and the Hyperspectral Scanner System (HSS) sensor onboard an aircraft. The Landsat-5 measurements are employed to identity the urban and hot areas, since there is a high correlation with the thermal channel, which can indicate the presence of the heat island effect. Moreover the HSS sensor that has 6 thermal infrared bands and it is found that the channel 48 presents the best correlation with surface measurements done with the Thermopoint. Afterwards, the intra-urban heat island analysis was initiated to verify details of the diurnal and nocturnal behavior of the targets thermal emission in high spatial resolution (2.7 and 8.3m, depending the aircraft altitude) during day and night flights. The results show that many points over city have 20ºC higher temperatures than neighborhood points and this is a function of metallic roof and industrial furnaces. At night, the lake behavior is like a heat island.
