AbstractMulti-temporal optical and microwave (SAR) remote sensing images have allowed the mapping and changes of the shoreline. Landsat (MSS, TM and ETM ), JERS-1 SAR, RADARSAT-1 (Wide 1 Mode) and SRTM images acquired from 1980 to 2003 were digitally orthorectified and enhanced. These processed images were inserted in a geographic information system (GIS) to map and quantify the shoreline changes occurred during 23 years along the Cabo Orange National Park. The process of deposition was responsible for mangrove progradation, which accreted 55,85 km2 in the period, while erosive process was responsible for shoreline retreat, and erosion of 31,69 km2 of mangrove areas. Therefore, the mangrove areas increased around 24,16 km2. This suggest that Orange and Cassipore mud capes work out as modern deposits of muds transported from the Amazon river mouth.
