| Abstract | The aim of this work is to quantify the deforestation rate in the wetlands at the municipalities located at the Solimões/ Amazon River main stem in Amazonas and Pará states for the years of 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. For that we quantified: the proportion of wetlands for each municipality in the Amazonas (37) and Pará (18) States using the non-validated Amazon wetland mask; the deforested area and rate for each municipality using the digital deforestation data base provided by PRODES project; and the deforested area and rate within a 2 km buffer from the Amazon River bank, assuming that the floodplain is mainly used for owners living nearby the river banks. Results showed that the total amount of deforested area until 2004 is 7.836,97 km², corresponding to 6,45% of the wetlands in Para state and 4,67% of the wetlands in Amazonas state. The deforested area in the 2 km Terra Firme buffer at the wetland boundary was 34,69% in Para and 56,55% in Amazonas states. These numbers comprises 49% and 90% of the total deforestation rate in that area. | |||
