Abstract | Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), relative and absolute, were generated from ASTER/Terra images covering part of the Paraíba do Sul River Valley, located in the São Paulo State, Brazil. The infrared stereoscopic images from the VNIR sensor subsystem were used. The absolute DEM was generated based on ground control points obtained from a cartographic dataset with known accuracy. On its turn, the relative DEM was generated based on the images metadata file complemented by SRTM3 altimetric data. The Toutin 3D physical model was used for the DEMs and orthoimages generation. The planialtimetric validation was executed through graphic analysis, descriptive statistics and hypotheses tests. The precision test reference was the standard deviation established by the Brazilian Cartographic Accuracy Standard (PEC in portuguese). Therefore, the DEMs were classified in accordance with the National Cartography Technical Norms. Concerning the altimetry, the root mean square error of the relative DEM was approximately four times greater than the one of the absolute DEM, and both presented trend. The relative DEM attained altimetry PEC A class at a 1:100,000 scale and the absolute DEM attained altimetry PEC B class at a 1:50,000 scale. The planimetric validation indicates that the data are suitable for thematic mapping (geomorphological mapping, for example) at a 1:50,000 scale. |
