| Abstract | The political and administrative municipality emancipation may interfere directly in the environment quality. The municipality of Forquetinha, RS emancipated themselves in 2001 and presents 86% of the population living in rural areas. The study compared the lands use and covering before (1999) and after (2007) the emancipation. For the characterization of the lands use in the two years, were used satellite images from Landsat 7 / ETM +, bands 3, 4 and 5, orbit-point 222-080. The supervised classifications followed the Maximum Likelihood Gaussian method. The demarcation of the water resources Permanent Preservation Area (PPA) followed the guidelines of the Brazilian Federal Law No. 4771, from Sept. 15, 1965. To obtain the water resources PPA map the two years lands use scenarios were used. After the maps generation, statistical analysis was performed in the software BioEstat 5.0. The results indicated that both the lands use and covering in total area of the municipality, as the water resources PPAs, presented an increment in the areas of Fields / Secondary Growth Vegetation and Native Forest and a decrease in the agricultural area and exposed soil. But the differences were not statistically significant by the Mann-Whitney test in any of the situations (U = 17.00, p = 0.8728) and (U = 11.00, p = 0.7540), respectively. The emancipation caused no significant differences in the scenarios analyzed and the GIS were appropriate tools for monitoring environmental changes in these situations. | |||
