AbstractChange detection techniques have attracted growing interest due to a large number of applications in different areas. The analysis of remote sensing images acquired on different dates allows the evaluating of spatial dynamics like urbanization process, natural disasters and other landscape changes. The basic premise in using remote sensing data for change detection is that changes in land cover must result in changes in radiance values. There are many possibilities to use quantitative approaches on change detection, but several of them use empirical ways to define the thresholds between the classes change and no-change. This paper presents results based on the Binomial distribution and implements a hypothesis test to take the decisions from a statistical point of view. The approach proposed is a post-classification method and requires contextual information extracted from a moving window on which the test is performed. Experiments using a pair of Landsat-TM images are presented. The results were considered satisfactory especially because it minimizes false alarms about the land cover changes.
