AbstractThe deforestation is the first step in almost all actions in the space. In the Mucuri River Basin (Northeast of Minas Gerais, Brazil) the historical and actual processes of occupation resulted in the replace of the rainforest by pasture. It is believed that only 20% of the Basin area is nowadays covered by remaining native vegetation. Nevertheless, the distribution of the forest fragments is not homogeneous, besides there were priority areas of de deforestation. As vectors of occupation and transformation of the space, the urban centers and the roads are also priority ways of the deforestation. This paper aims to compare the forest coverage in the whole Mucuri River Basin, with the forest coverage in the neighborhood of the urban centers and of the roads in that same Basin. The results show that the percentage of forests increases significantly with the distance to urban center and to roads. Moreover, the influence of the urban centers in the deforestation is seems to be higher than the influence of roads. The methodological procedures were the manual interpretation of the images Cbers-2, mapping the remaining forests. Also, buffers of 50, 100, 250, 500, 1.000, 2.500, and 5.000 meters were made to verify the forest coverage in each one. The statistics were calculated and the data systematized to allow the comparison between the urban centers and the roads influence in the deforestation with the whole Basin coverage.
