AbstractOver the last century the remote sensing technology gained credibility among researchers and decision maker due to its capability to provide valuable information on the consequences of the impact of human activities on the environment of large areas. In this paper, in order to evaluate the space and time variation of land use changes over the Japaratuba river basin, in Sergipe State, Brazil, information from images of the area taken at different dates (09/09/1997; 12/09/2001; 07/12/2006) acquired through the sensors TM (LANDSAT 5) and ETM+ (LANDSAT 7) were used to determine the variation in area of the following classes of land use: forest, pastureland, water bodies, urban area, mangrove, tillage (sugar cane), clouds and clouds shadows. After registering, selecting the due band combination (R4G5B3), the supervised classification method was applied and thematic maps of land use at different dates were obtained. The findings showed that there were increases in pasture land and in area of tillage of sugar cane in detriment of the native forest area. Also this river basin is heavily impacted due to human activities.
