AbstractThis study had as objectives to define ecologically similar areas in the Rio de Janeiro State, where the soil order, the precipitation and the altitude were the decisive factors to subsidize the regionalization of the production of seeds and native forest seedlings. For so much, it used tools of the geographical information system (GIS) to put upon the soil information, annual total precipitation and elevation. The vectorial thematic maps were converted for the raster format and reclassified according to established classes of each factor. The themes raster were later ecologically contained in way to define the areas similar. The generated product defined areas that differ in at least one of the classes of each one of the 3 analyzed variables. Considering the factors pedoclimatic, the Rio de Janeiro State hold 20 similar areas, that can be reduced for 12 if they disrespect the areas that act less than 1% of the State area. The most common area was to 2, it corresponds to areas of forests sub-montanas, with precipitation among 1000-1500 mm and soils units with Latossolos, Cambissolos and Argissolos. Already the areas 6, 7,14, 15, 16, 18, 19 and 20 represent committees only 1,3% of the total area of the State. The zoning is a first approach, to reach the final objective of the regionalization they are necessary subsequent studies.
