AbstractThis work assesses the performance of the METEOSAT-9 multispectral images in monitoring and forecasting severe weather conditions over Brazil. A central issue in our study was to investigate their distinct spectral cloud top retrievals from the METEOSAT-9 images, with a focused study of a severe weather that occurred in Southeastern Brazil on October 24th, 2007. The results reveal that METEOSAT-9 cloud top retrievals attain clear and good approach in forecasting severe storms that can cause widespread daily rains over the areas located in Brazil.
