AbstractAbstract Remote Sensing techniques have had an impressive progress in the capacity of data analysis for scientific and practical applications, but this is dependent on our capability of handling increasingly large quantities of digital data. Part of this problem is associated with high spatial resolution of the products, allowing the detection and analysis of very fine features. The quantitative characterization of such fine resolution features demand, however, the development of newer and more efficient digital statistical analysis methods. In this paper we investigate the effectiveness of the Asymmetric Fragmentation Operator, developed by Rosa et al. (1999) for the quantitative characterization of oceanic features present in thermal AVHRR IR images. The first results obtained indicate some promise in distinguishing features according to their structural complexities, but the present used algorithm is only robust to clearly separate thermal fronts from oceanic current meanders after filter application.
