| Abstract | The objective of this work is to evaluate the potential of P-band polarimetric images to stratify the primary forest and secondary succession, throught the analysis of the relationship between backscatter and basal area data. A test site located in the Tapajós region (Pará State) was selected. Statistical regression model was used to verify he spatial configuration of P-band backscatter from primary and secondary vegetation types, considering the intrinsic variations of these formations in terms of basal area. For this thematic mapping, a contextual Markovian classification technique (ICM) was used in these airborne SAR images, to delineate primary forest and secondary succession, associating them to the basal area intervals. The advance that was reached in the P-band airborne data processing can improve the monitoring approach of the land cover change, a process whose speed was accelerated as a results of human action in the Amazon during the last two decades. |
