AbstractThe purpose of the present study is analyze the seasonal variability of the stratospheric ozone over South America and surroundings areas using satellite imagery from Nimbus7/TOMS. The study period ranges from Nov1978 to May1993. Fourier analyses were used to depict the annual cycle of ozone in that region. The results show that in general the ozone variability in the equatorial areas is not significant. The highest rates occur along 60ºS during the austral spring and the lowest ones occur in polar latitudes. In the austral autumn, the ozone variability as a function of latitude is not significant. The annual cycle analysis shows that the first harmonic is maximized/minimized around 30ºS-50ºS in September/March. Also, interannual variability of the annual cycle along the meridians 25ºW and 60ºW and parallels 90ºS and 10ºS suggest that over Pacific Ocean the amplitudes are larger than the ones over the Atlantic Ocean. The interannual variability is maximum at high latitudes and minimum at low latitudes.
