AbstractDue to produce several atmospheric gases as carbon monoxide (CO), an air pollutant that generates ozone, a greenhouse gas, biomass burning (queimadas) is probably our main environmental concern. The queimadas occur in the domain of the savanna (Cerrado) in the Central Brazil, and in the domain of the Amazonian rain forest. In the Cerrado they are independent of previous deforestation or slashing, but in the Amazônia they occur only in previously deforested areas. Some weeks after the forest has been cut the dried biomass is burned. This practice is repeated in subsequent years to clean the terrain and/or to prevent vegetation regrowth. This article discusses the necessity of a Brazilian operational remote program dedicated to the detecting, mapping and monitoring queimadas at an Amazonian scale. Such a program would not require a sophisticated remote sensing payload to provide data on a operational basis.
