AbstractRegional water surplus of a watershed (Paraíba do Sul river) was calculated with thermo-pluviometric data from DAEE (Water and Electrical Energy Department, SP) stations to further modeling of urban flood events. Basic information plans were constructed exploring known topographic effects, modeled with SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission) data, on rainfall and temperature monthly means. Monthly water surplus maps were calculated through the operation of Thornthwaite & Mather water budget on this raster database with Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The independent and indivudually optimized spatialization of each basic variable and the incorporation of topographic data brought remarkable improvements in the quality of the final maps.
