AbstractThis paper describes the use of radiance spectra from a Hyperion scene to characterize the main targets present in the semiarid region of Paraiba state (Brazil) subject to desertification process. These spectra were also compared with Landsat 7 ETM+ radiance spectra. Target were: green vegetation, dry caatinga vegetation, silted water, clear water, degraded rangeland, and bare soil. The results showed the advantage of hyperspectral data set over broad band multispectral data in characterizing the targets and in obtaining spectral indices such as the normalized diffference vegetation index (NDVI).
