AbstractThis paper introduces an innovative approach for tonal and edge enhancement of digital images, with multiple potential applications in geologic remote sensing. The study involved the design of convolution filters (high-pass and low-pass), but considering the weighting of values attributed to each kernels cells as a function of the distance of a particular cell to the kernels center. Due to this reasoning these filters were coined as proportional filters. In order to test the filters both qualitative and quantitatively, they were applied to a image with specific edge and tonal variations i.e., an image of the light emitted by a flame, and to a Landsat-5 TM image. This experiment allowed an accurate evaluation of the effects produced by the proportional filters in the control images, as well as their usefulness in the enhancement of edge (high-pass) and tonal (low-pass) information.
