AbstractEfforts have been made to develop appropriate methodologies for assessing soil erosion potential where the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been the most worldwide used method. The objective of this study is to apply concepts of Fuzzy Logic in a model for assessment of soil erosion potential using a reduced number of variables. The input data to the two-variable Fuzzy model proposed are slope and land cover maps. Both models (two-variables Fuzzy and USLE) were applied in a testing area - the Pimentel basin, Rio de Janeiro State. The results obtained with both models were comparable, regarding the spatial distribution as well as the % of the area in the basin occupied by three classes, among five defined: Moderate, High-Moderate and High. Therefore, the two-variable Fuzzy model succeeded in estimating areas with moderate-to-high erosion potential, using a reduced number of variables. Such feature makes the two-variable Fuzzy model suitable particularly for those regions characterized by limited resources, insufficient information and unsustainable use of soil.
