AbstractMore than 90% of the electric energy consumed in Brazil comes from its water resources. For this, it is necessary to rigorously evaluate sedimentation in Brazilian reservoirs, mainly because the sediments cause the reduction in storage capacity, provide conditions to upstream flooding problems and allow aquatic plants growth that affects water quality standards. The present work intends to evaluate the bathymetry spatial distribution within a reservoir through satellite imagery and a geoestatistical approach. Under this framework, the present work develops a methodology to estimate bathymetry using one IKONOS image and the Bayesian kriging geostatistical model. The results showed that the methodology presents potential to be applied in evaluating and in monitoring reservoir sedimentation, mainly due to allowing the implementation of a database temporally consistent and to requiring a reduced data point density for calibration.
