AbstractThe crop production at the State of Goiás has substantially increased since the 80`s due to the increase in growing area but specially due to artificial irrigation that allowed two more harvests each year. To control the revenue of State taxes from agricultural production, the existing fiscal system was not feasible and by 1999 a study group proposed to use remote sensing. It was something totally new and SEFAZ-GO, the State Secretary of Finances, decided to support this effort. By the beginning of 2001 the new Geoprocessing Coordination started the work, locating geographically the 2500 main properties, a time consuming work that will end by 2005, and analyzing Landsat-7 and CBERS-2 images, using SPRING as a GIS tool. The evaluation of the crop acreage by property is done manually and this method is not feasible for the 2500 properties to control. This work describes the successful effort to simplify the crop area estimation process, achieving its full automation.
