Abstract | The Pantanal, the Earth largest flood plain, can be divided into eleven sub regions. The most curious, Nhecolandia, occupies the southern half of the Taquari alluvial fan. Nhecolandia are distinct from another sub region by its peculiar physiography. This can be defined by the presence of seasonally flooded savannas bounded by forest fragments and thousands of lakes with a great spatial, physical, chemical and biological variability. The most notable characteristics are the salinity (from fresh to brackish waters), pH (from 6 to up than 10) and the limnological communities (from bacillariophyceae to cyanobacteria) and cell densities (from 148 to 5914648 cel.ml-1). As a general statement, the brackish lakes are always alkaline but the alkaline lakes may have fresh waters. This paper presents the first results of correlation between phytoplanktonic dominant classes, pH and salinity (expressed by electric conductivity) and the radiance measured in ASTER VNIR bands. In 24 lakes were obtained in situ data from electrical conductivity and pH of surface water. Samples were also collected at each lake, fixed and later analyzed in laboratory, with the help of triocular research microscope and automatic system for analyzing images. The counting of phytoplankton adopted the method of sedimentation and density was calculated from the quantitative analysis. It is verified a clear positive correlation between cyanobacteria with VNIR radiance, especially in the 556 nm region, due the abundant presence of pigments, and in the 807 nm region, due to organic matter dissolved. |
