		<abstract>Estimates of chlorophyll-a concentration were performed in Ubatuba-SP coastal water using TM/Landsat images. Simultaneous acquisition of TM/Landsat data and water samples were obtained at two different days during 1991. The analysis of the ""in situ"" data set showed oligotrophic conditions during both campaigns. Radiometric and geometric correction of the satellite images were carried out. The digital number average of 3 by 3 windows of bands TM1, TM2 and TM3 at each sampling area were determined. These digital numbers and the sampled chlorophyll-a concentrations were statistically analyzed using the stepwise model. This method generated a statistically reliable model to estimate the concentration of chlorophyll-a in the surface of the water. The model explained 83 of the variation in the chlorophyll-a concentration in the water surface (Chl-a=0.060914+0.109172TM2+0.214841TM3).</abstract>
